The Listening Beneath the Ice

A silent night for Vethys

On the coldest night of winter, the Flotilla observes a night of silence. From sunset to sunrise, disciples refrain from speaking (and, if possible, from all digital communication). The purpose is to listen for the voice of Vethys in the deep – not a literal voice, but the quiet current that is usually drowned out by words.

Guidelines

  • No spoken words. You may communicate by touch, gesture, or writing if absolutely necessary.
  • If you are with a huddle, sit together near a bowl of water or a window facing the ice.
  • Spend time in darkness or candlelight. Let your ears adjust to the silence.
  • If thoughts arise, do not chase them. Let them drift like ice floes.

At dawn, break the silence by reciting the Litany of the Belly‑Slide together. Then share a breakfast of simple, warm food – porridge, tea, bread – in quiet companionship. The Listening teaches that the deepest truths are not shouted; they are whispered beneath the ice.
