The Long Drift
A festival of aimlessness
In the height of summer, when the ice has retreated and the days are long, the Flotilla sets aside one day for The Long Drift. This is a day with no goals, no outcomes, no productivity. It is the antidote to the tyranny of purpose.
How to Observe
- Float on water if you can – a lake, a pool, the sea. If not, lie on the ground and imagine the current beneath you.
- No phones, no screens, no recording. The day is unrecorded.
- Do not plan. Let boredom come. Let it pass. Let the mind wander where it will.
- If you are with a huddle, do not speak unless words drift up unbidden. Silence is welcome.
- At dusk, each person speaks a single word describing what they felt. These words are woven into a collective prayer offered to Vethys.
The Long Drift teaches us that we do not always need to swim. Sometimes, the most sacred act is to let the current carry you, without asking where.
